| Born in Camberley, Surrey. Studied art in Paris at the Academie Julian. Married Ruth Alison, a portrait painter. Moved to St. Ives, Cornwall, during World War I,where they ran a painting school. Moved to London in 1924, and returned again to Cornwall in 1931. Simpson was a painter in oil, tempera and watercolour, mainly of landscapes, hunting scenes, birds and animals, marine; also a writer. Most known for his wildfowl paintings. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute, Royal Glasgow Institute and at the Paris Salon where he won a silver medal in 1923. He also won gold medals in San Francisco (Panama International Exposition, 1915)and again in Paris in 1924. His works are among the holdings of the Laing Art Gallery and Museum, Newcastle, and by galleries in Doncaster, Derby, Bournemouth and abroad. Published books on hunting, horse-riding, rodeos, animal and bird painting and an autobiography The Fields of Home. |
