Vasily Kandinsky

( Moscow 1866 – Neuilly-sur-Seine 1944)

Klänge was a volume of prose, poems and woodcuts, published in Munich by R. Piper & Co. Verlag in 1913.

The woodcuts for Klänge were fundamental in Kandinsky’s shift towards abstraction, which had already begun in 1908. Among the 12 colour and 12 large black and white woodcuts we can easily see the progression and evolution, particularly in, the several Improvisations and Compositions. Reduction to essential lines predominates and in some woodcuts the images can be deciphered only with difficulty. Throughout this series the link with music remains a constant feature.
