Jean Helleu (1894 –1985) was the son of the Edwardian society artist Paul-Cesar Helleu, of whom we often carry etchings and drawings. Although in style he did not follow his father, his artistic blood showed throughout his life in the creation of precious little works, such as our Port en Normandie (St-Vaast); they are often marine in subject, particularly views of ports and moored boats, with a dreamy, tenuous but brilliant light which is his signature piece. Although the influence of Marquet cannot be denied, Jean Helleu remains a highly accomplished artist in his own right.
